Czechs are planning the 1st ascent of a 7,000-m peak in Pakistan
A trio of Czech climbers - Zdeněk Hák, Radoslav Groh, and Jaroslav Bánský—have traveled to the Karakoram range in Pakistan. During the roughly six-week expedition, they plan to attempt the first ascent of a mountain approximately 7,800 meters high, the summit of which, according to Zdeněk Hák, has not been reached by anyone in roughly the last 40 years. Before tackling their main goal, they plan an acclimatization climb and a ski mountaineering descent of the 6,000-meter peak Biarchedi.
According to ExplorersWeb, a climb of the 7,821-meter-high Masherbrum is under consideration, including its as-yet-unclimbed west face. “We don’t yet have a clear idea of which route we’ll take up Masherbrum. We’re considering several options,” ExplorersWeb quoted Zdeněk Hák as saying. The climbers themselves have not yet specified a concrete goal.
Masherbrum is one of the least-visited seven-thousanders in the Karakoram. Only a few expeditions have reached the summit so far.
Zdeněk Hák, Radoslav Groh, and Jaroslav Bánský have been among the most successful Czech Himalayan mountaineers in recent years. In 2024, they made the first ascent of Muchu Chhish, then the world’s highest unclimbed mountain, and they have also completed other significant first ascents in the Karakoram. The first two are recipients of the Piolet d’Or.
