Hello
Years ago when I built my first wall I built a variety of wooden holds for my wall. With some rather simple woodworking tools and a budget that has more time than money, I was able to make nice holds that did quite well, allowing me to spend my precious few dollars on higher quality pieces (i.e., pusher holds). Hardwoods work best and should be drilled to discourage splitting. They aren't quite as nice as the plastic jobs, but will give you just as good of a workout on the right overhang. (thin rail shapes and ones a little wider than are easy to cling to seem to do well) Also, I experimented with making some with automobile bondo but couldn't find suitable molds--now, however, they sell the soft silicone baking molds for muffins and such that could be "peeled" off--definitely worth taking a look at!
Good luck,
