Czech František Agostino – Yosemite: 3 hard big walls in 2 weeks
He completed Golden Gate in 26 hours and 10 minutes
Czech climber František D'Agostino has had an exceptionally successful stint in Yosemite Valley. Together with American Sam Stroh, they free-climbed three difficult multi-pitch routes in two weeks: El Niño (5.13c), Golden Gate (5.13a) on El Capitan, and Father Time (5.13b) on Middle Cathedral Rock.
Their ascent of Golden Gate on El Capitan drew the most attention, as the pair completed it in 26 hours and 10 minutes.
František posted about the climb on Facebook, where he described it as “the greatest climbing day of their lives.” They climbed the route from the bottom up, taking turns leading the pitches, and both led the dreaded Downclimb pitch (5.13-). The key section was the famous A5 Traverse, which they both climbed on their fifth attempt in full sunlight.
Prior to that, on May 2, the pair free-climbed El Niño on El Capitan in 18 hours and 21 minutes. Subsequently, on May 14, they added Father Time on Middle Cathedral Rock, where they spent just under 15 hours. According to American climbing media, all three routes are among the most prestigious and difficult big free climbs in Yosemite.
Twenty-five-year-old František D'Agostino (his original surname was Bulička; he took his wife’s surname), a former member of the Czech Mountaineering Association’s elite youth team, the Sokolíci, has long been among the top Czech climbers. His partner, Sam Stroh, is best known for his fast free ascents of major Yosemite walls; in 2021, he became the youngest climber to complete the Freerider route on El Capitan in a single day.
